The Sleep Battle :: Part 3,821

There were so many things I wanted to post today; a few things about the virtual 5k Jenny and I are hosting sit idle in my drafts, a few fun/filler "about me" posts are there, as I see I've gained a few new followers (hi, there!). But I just can't pull myself together enough to do any of those any justice right now.

You see, it's currently 5:07AM. I've been up since 3:30. Let me correct that. WE have been up since 3:30…

I'll be the first to tell you my child isn't real great when it comes to sleeping at night. It seems no matter what stage we are in sleep is never something where Marcus excels.

This sleep regression cycle I take full blame. It all started when we were on our Midwest tour. Marcus, for whatever reason, would wake in the middle of the night crying/screaming (I'm going to chalk it up to being in a different environment/house/crib/whatever). Under normal circumstances (ie. being in our own home), we'd let him figure it out. But, I hate putting people out, especially if those people are taking us in for multiple weeks. So, instead of Marcus self-soothing he would end up in bed with me. He would quiet down, quickly fall asleep, and we all managed to get some shut-eye.

Insert this habit happening every night for about a month. A month! Up until this point I could count on one hand how many times my child slept in my bed. And, then I blew that all to Hell by letting him get all cozy for. a. month

We are currently in the process of trying to break this utterly inconvenient bedtime habit. It's been two weeks and I'm over it.

The fight to the crib at night seems to be lessening. Most nights it only takes 10-15 minutes of crying before he's out. But, it's been a nightly (or should I say morning?) issue of Marcus waking up between 1:30AM and 3:30AM. He cries, he screams, and he won't let up until either Scott or I does something about it.

This morning Scott had an early day, so he was out the door by 3:30, which was the same time Marcus decided to wake up. I tried rocking for a few minutes, and then putting him back in his crib. That only resulted in hysterics from my child. By 4:30 I'd surrendered and had the kid in my bed. By 4:45 it was obvious neither of us was going to get any more sleep.

Now here I  we sit, writing this post… I'm not sure how we're going to make it through this day, but I have  a hunch it's just going to be one of those days… Is it too early for a bottle glass of wine?
Here we are, bright eyed and bushy tailed at 5:10AM. Because apparently my child does not share my love of sleep…
Post publish edit: By 6:03 my sleep swindler is passed out on the living room floor. Sweet Jesus, give me the strength to get through this day.

  2. Have you considered a sleep clock? Target and Amazon have various types. It has displays that tell the kid when it's okay to get up. Maybe Marcus will think it's new and exciting??

  3. I just laughed so hard at his face. He doesn't realize this is a "why are we doing this right now?" selfie. I'm still kinda laughing. Not at you... at him. ;)

  4. Ugh, that's rough. I hope you can get in a nap at some point today. Jackson kinda did the same thing when we were in Phoenix in January. His sleep has been better lately, but this week it's been off again. I think it may be because Jake and I were out of town over the weekend and he's just wanting to be close to us at night. Hopefully, we get back to normal soon.

  5. Oh man. That's horrible. I'm always terrified that if I ever have a child, he/she will end up being one who never sleeps. Simply because I love sleep more than anything and karma has a funny way of doing things like that.

  6. I feel you. We've created the co-sleeping monster and we haven't been sleeping well (or at all) either. We bought her new bedding, have tried 8448920 different kinds of night lights and sound machines, and even rearranged her room. Kid will not stay in her bed all night. My only slice of comfort at this point is knowing that she will eventually go to college where she will be forced to sleep in her own bed. God bless her roommate though.

  8. Hang in there! I remember doing the same thing on vacation a few years ago with my then 2 year old. It was a tough cycle to break. I wish I had some new or wonderful advice for you. All I can say is stay strong, and I hope you can squeeze in a nap.

  9. I have no good advice so I will just say hang in there, enjoy the coffee and take a nap when Scott gets home today! I have heard good things about those toddler clocks that Amy mentioned - I have one on my amazon list for when Callie moves to a big bed - but we haven't used one ourselves.

  13. that sucks. a lot. but you were between a rock and a hard place. I would not want to put another family out with a screaming child either. but now you are paying for it. Man, I hope he figures it out soon. I am a big fan of sleep. Love it in fact. If you add OJ or tomato juice to it you can drink anything for breakfast =)

  14. Oh girl, I am so sorry. We had a rough night last night too but nothing quite as bad. Up at 11pm and then again at 12:30am. I had no idea if I had even slept between wake ups, I was so out of it. I normally let Mason figure it out as well, but when he starts crying hysterically, I just can't let him cry anymore and have to comfort him. BUT then that backfires bc then I need to put him down and the crying starts again. The only thing that seems to comfort him is when I tell him that I am there, rub his back, and turn on his sleep sheep. Poor kids. Maybe they are having bad dreams? I have no good advice, but hope that Marcus sleeps better tonight!

  16. Oh man. I feel your pain Momma, Savanna has spoiled me, she goes to bed by 8 every night, sleeps until 8:30, UNTIL RECENTLY. All of the sudden she is waking up 5 or 6 times a night, fussing and refusing to go back to sleep. I know I made the mistake of making her paci a need and now I'm scared to take it away:( I'm hoping baby she's just teething and gets past it! Hope you get some sleep!!

  17. =(( I'm glad today was better, but yuck. Traveling just kills the sleep pattern. Hopefully a few more good nights and you'll be in a little better groove.
