M & J Monday

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.

So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Julia || 21 Months

I swear I write one of these things out, snap a million pictures of Julia in hopes for a handful of keepers, and then I turn around and have to do it all over again. The saying that time is a thief is no lie.
Let's get down to the deets on Julia this past month.
Stats
Height: I'm guessing 33.5 inches
Weight: 24.5 pounds
She's pretty comfy in 2T clothes, though there are several 18-24 month pieces that fit well.
All of her teeth are in, save for the 2-year molars (I'm already dreading those).
Loves
Marcus, depending on the situation (or if he has something she wants).
Being barefoot.
Being outside.
The park.
Running around naked.
Being chased.
Playing peek-a-boo.
Bubbles.
Music.
Dancing.
Singing.
Puppies, cats, cows.
Bubble Guppies.
Fruit.
Spaghetti.
Cheese.
Water.
Sweets, particularly chocolate and frosting.
Attending Gymboree.
Swimming, playing with her water table, bath time.
Going for rides in the  jogging stroller.
Playing at Marcus' preschool.
Dislikes
Marcus, depending on the situation.
Being told, "no."
Sitting still.
Most veggies (with exception to the very tops of asparagus).
Most meat.
Potatoes - how is she my child?! Fries are the exception.
Trucks, specifically garbage trucks and semis.
Vocabulary
I can't believe I forgot to mention this *last* month, but Julia has started saying "I love you." It sounds a lot like, "I wuv weeeeee," but it's getting more decipherable. It's positively the best thing to hear. Julia has mastered most of the animal sounds, now. We've been working on counting, and she skips "one," and goes right to "twooooooo." Every color is blue or black, though she knows how to say most of the other primary and secondary colors. She's pretty much a parrot. If I ask her to say something most of the time she will give a valiant effort. Marcus' name is pretty tricky for her, but we're working on it. She's also getting pretty proficient at simple two word sentences. And, she engages in conversations, even if we don't quite catch everything she's trying to say. All that said, most of the time just Scott, Marcus and I can understand her, but she's getting there.
Notable Moments
We traveled to Kansas City this past weekend, and I have to say, Julia did surprisingly well on the three hour flights. The last 40 minutes were kind of tricky, as she was totally over being confined to my lap/the floor by my feet, but she surpassed all my expectation.
Just recently - say, the past three weeks - Julia has taken a serious liking to a particular blanket. She insists on napping and sleeping with it, always.
Within the last month or so, when we walk Marcus to his preschool entrance, we always walk with a friend of mine and her daughter. Almost every morning Julia will let go of my hand and demand my friend hold her hand as we make our way to the doors. It takes a while, but once Julia gets to know someone well she is so sweet.
Julia's hair is getting so long, and her curls are just the best. I've given up hope on bows and clips (for now), and I've tried countless times to put in a pony tail, with no success. My neighbor watched the kids one morning for a bit while I went for a run. When I came back and picked the kids up Julia's hair was in the cutest little pony tail. Julia had no problem letting my neighbor put her hair up, but I still can't get close to her with a hair tie.
I think that pretty much covers the last month with the little lady. There's an abundance of sass and sweet and love, and though some days are pretty exhausting, I can't say I'd trade any of it.
Cheers to 21 months, and onward to month 22!

Fix #14 + $150 SF Giveaway

It feels like ages since my last fix!

This go around I asked stylist Raquel for summer inspired pieces. I'd been pinning rompers, jean shorts, some tanks, and I specifically requested one particular maxi dress that I've been swooning over forever.

As usual, Raquel did an outstanding job paying close attention to my request and clearly sifted through my style board.

Before we get to the threads... Some pretty amazing ladies and myself are hosting a $150 Stitch Fix Mother's Day Giveaway! Entry options are available at the end of the post.

Onward to the fix!

Skies Are Blue || Rhema Romper
$64.00

I decided I'd go out on a whim and try the romper thing again. You can never go wrong with  black, so I fully appreciated the color. As with the last romper I tried, the length of the shorts portion left me so self conscious. It seems so... short. And, lets talk about the number of buttons there were just get the front opened. SO. MANY. I got so frustrated trying to button the thing back up once it was on that I may or may not have left like, six, still unbuttoned for this photo. I shudder to think what a chore it would be to get out of this thing when the need to pee strikes. The length and the buttons were deal breakers.

Verdict || Returned

FATE || Ruby Maxi Dress
$78.00
This dress was so silky and flowy, and exactly what I dreamed it would be. I love the ultra feminine floral detail. And, there are some subtle butterflies flittering around in the print as well. The slits give the dress a sexy feel that most of my dresses don't offer. My closet if void of the halter style so I appreciated that as well. I can see myself reaching for this piece for a summer date night. I can't sing enough praises about this one. I simply love it.

Verdict || Kept

Papermoon || Mula Knit Tank
$38.00
Level 99 || Josh Denim Short
$68.00
Full disclosure. I abhor my legs, and always have. So, shorts are something I don't love reaching for. Though, during the most hellacious summer days they're practical and necessary. I was really hoping I'd like these, as they fit really well. However, I wasn't sold on the large front pockets. The price didn't do the pair any favors either. For something I don't particularly love to begin with, the price needs to be a tad lower. As for the tank top... it's cute, something that looks very much "me." But, for $38.00 I feel I could find something similar for less.

Verdict - Level 99 Josh Denim Shorts || Returned
Verdict - Papermoon Mula Knit Tank || Returned

Spade & Heart || Clariss Embroidered Keyhold Knit Halter
$54.00
This is a tank top I wouldn't normally go to in a store. On the hanger it didn't really wow me, and the print didn't impress me much. However, on, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I actually liked this piece. The tank was super comfortable, the key hole was a cute detail, and the embroidered print was actually a nice touch. That said, for $54.00 I couldn't see myself reaching for this near enough to want to keep it.

Verdict || Returned

A 1/5, though I'm not at all disappointed. For me, that dress is a unicorn piece, I could not be any more thrilled to have it in my closet. How did I do? Did I keep the right piece? Was there something I should have hung on to?

Let's get to the $150 Mother's Day, shall we?
Don't forget to check out these great ladies to see their latest fixes!

Wall Crawl - Hermosa Beach

Some time ago I posted a pic of the kids in front of a wall (shocking, right?) on Facebook, and a friend asked me if I was running out of walls. I had to laugh, because honestly, I know I haven't even scratched the surface of façades Los Angeles has to offer. Though, I'm going to try like hell to get to as many great pieces as I possibly can.

I've been chipping away at my massive list of neighborhoods/cities/areas. With two kids in tow it's not always easy, as is anything when it comes to kids. And, my window of cooperation (or lack thereof) lasts about 90 minutes, two hours tops. So, it's kind of slow going.

When we go on these wall crawls I do my very best to make sure an activity is planned near each location that I know the kids will enjoy (a new park, a museum, a science center, a beach stop, etc.). Let's be real honest, my kids don't necessarily share my profound love for wall murals, and I don't want them to come home at the end of the day totally bored because I wanted to go see pretty urban scapes. Though, I do have to say, Marcus is paying attention more and pointing out walls he thinks are cool - said walls are typically your regular, run-of-the-mill white or stucco walls, but I love that he's looking.

With all that said, here is one of our latest crawls... Hermosa Beach.

This little beach community is jam packed with color. From the store and restaurant fronts to the entries of apartments and houses. I was so tempted to stick the kids in a couple of yards because the way some of the houses were painted were just that cool. I did manage a little self restraint and stuck to public property...

Typically, each area we visit has one main mural that I'm trying to hunt down. For Hermosa Beach, this was *the* one.
14th Street and Hermosa Avenue
The mural was huge. Even standing smack dab in the middle of the street I couldn't get the whole mural in one frame.

This was the second reason I had to get to Hermosa.
Pier Avenue and Sunset Drive
I couldn't get over how real the girl making the splash looks.

And this beauty was the third.
Hermosa Avenue and 11th Court
Admittedly, I was a bit disappointed to see this mural was painted above an open parking structure. But, that did not at all deter from the amazing artistry in this piece. That whole mural is painted to look 3D, none of it actually sticks out from the wall. The piece blew. my. mind.

After finding the murals we putzed around a bit as I admired the store fronts and tried to get my kids to cooperate (unsuccessfully).
All found along Pier Avenue
And, about 90 minutes later the kids were ready for a park and a snack, and I was ready for a nap.

That's a wrap on Hermosa!

M & J Monday

From the day we arrive on the planet
And blinking, step into the sun
There's more to see than can ever be seen
More to do than can ever be done
There's far too much to take in here
More to find than can ever be found
But the sun rolling high
Through the sapphire sky
Keeps great and small on the endless round
It's the circle of life
And it moves us all
Through despair and hope
Through faith and love
Till we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the circle
The circle of life

Wall Crawl - Carlsbad

Over our Spring Break we didn't have much in the way of plans. A few trips to our favorite parks/museums/science centers/aquariums. And, of course, a wall crawl tossed in there for good measure.

Let's just take a moment to talk about the cutest little beach community of Carlsbad. It was so dang adorable. Every little shop, restaurant, coffee spot, and winery (!) had me swooning. Before we left I told Scott I needed an entire (long) weekend in Carlsbad.

Moving along to the main event. WALLS!

THIS is the reason I wanted to get to Carlsbad.
Artist : @micahelsummers
Location: Sleeping Tiger Coffees
I'd seen this wall pop up a few times in my Insta feed, and every. single. time. I saw it I fell in love with it a little more. When we actually came upon it my excitement was palpable. I also can't put into words how thrilled I was to get BOTH kids in the shot. Per the usual, Julia wasn't into wall hunting and preferred to chill in the stroller while snacking the. entire. time. Marcus, however, obliged with every wall we came upon.

After finding the gem of all walls the kids and I just kind of putzed around Carlsbad, with general ideas of walls we (I) wanted to find and locations of each wall.

The rest of the walls are in no specific order as to how we found them, nor are the in any logical order in regards to mapping them out.

The wall below actually the very first wall we spotted, and I couldn't get out of the car fast enough. Artist, Free Humanity, has done several works all over California, as well as other cities throughout the nation, and I was tickled to finally spot one for myself.
Artist: @freehumanity
Location: Señor Rubby's
What makes the above wall so unique is that the business invites different artists every so often to come and paint murals. So, the wall is ever changing. It's cool that new art is rotated. On the flip side of that, it's kind of sad that each piece is only around for a very limited time. I am anxious to see what artist is brought in next and how he/she/they will transform the wall.

Getting a picture of the following wall was tough. It was located in a very narrow alley, so capturing the whole thing straight on was near impossible. I do love that Julia decided to join for this one though (please note the snacks).

Marcus actually spotted this Mario wall well before I did. We couldn't get to it when he saw it - we were on the opposite side of the street. So, I told him we'd stop by in on our way back. I totally forgot about it until Marcus reminded me, "Mom! Don't forget that Mario wall!" I tell you, I'm training him well.

The next series of images were kind of like finding hidden treasures all over downtown. It's clear they were all done by the same artist (though I've yet to find out just who the artist is). And, I know there's at least one more of these cute little ditty's out there that we weren't able to find.

This was our last wall, which just so happened to be on the opposite wall of the Free Humanities heart wall. We didn't see this when we stopped to snap the hearts, but we spotted it on our way back to our car!
Marcus. Bless him for being such a good sport.

That's a wrap on Carlsbad - even though I know we missed some walls. I guess that just means we'll have to go back!

Have you spotted any walls lately? It's been a thrill to see so many fun walls popping up on the 'gram, and hearing how others are exploring their cities, one wall at a time. Next wall you find, please tag me @desireemacke so I don't miss the façades you're finding!

I am the Captain of the S. S. Bathtub
I roam wherever I please
I am the Captain of the S. S. Bathtub
Come sail away with me
My friends come visit on the S. S. Bathtub
They arrive on water skis
Some are dolphins and some are whales
And some are manatees
I travel far in the S. S. Bathtub
I sail the seven seas
Sometimes I stop at islands
That look just like great big knees
I've got two dogs on the S. S. Bathtub
A Great Dane and a Pekinese
I name one Port and I named one Starboard
And I'll let you name their fleas
The fish that swim under the S. S. Bathtub
Know all their ABCs
They study hard in their school of fish
Then go and catch some Zs
For dinner on the S. S. Bathtub
We all eat mac and cheese
I don't use salt and I don't use pepper
'Cause I don't want the whales to sneeze
We love to play on the S. S. Bathtub
With our blocks and our frisbees
We make up songs and put on plays
And we never watch TVs
I am the Captain of the S. S. Bathtub
I roam wherever I please
I am the Captain of the S. S. Bathtub
Come sail away with me
