Picture Perfect Project {10} - The Big Camera v. The Phone

One of my main focuses of the Picture Perfect Project was to become more familiar with my "big" camera, and all it has to offer. And that still holds true. I'm still playing around with the big camera.

But....

Am I'm the only one who's ever thought that the only way to capture a really pretty photo is by using the 'big' camera?

For the longest time I'd haul my big camera everywhere with me. Have I captured some good images? Absolutely. My camera has easily been one of the best investments ever made.

However, there are times (like, a lot of times) when I just do not want to lug that thing around. Currently, I feel like a pack mule. The diaper bag is full of stuff, and it's heavy. If I add in the big camera it feels like my shoulder could dislocate at any moment.

Numerous times as I'm scrolling through my Insta feed I think, "Was that taken with his/her phone?!" Often, the answer is yes. Some of my favorite 'gram feeds are photos that are almost always taken with phones (if you're looking for a gorgeous example, check this feed out)! I love that these beautiful images are captured with a phone and not a camera.

That means we all have the ability to create pretty pictures!!

So, as of late the big camera has been on a bit of a hiatus, and the camera phone has been capturing many of our moments and memories.

Below is a small collection of photos that are pretty similar. One set was with my phone, the other with my camera. Take the poll after each set and guess which set taken with which device, no peeking!

Could you immediately tell the difference?? For me, the up close/zoom of Marcus was the giveaway, the rest, for me, were fairly difficult to pinpoint.

Set 1 was shot with my iPhone, Set 2 was shot with my big camera.

There are some differences in quality, and if I really learned how to master manual mode I know there could be a stark difference. But, when it comes down to it, more often than not the photos that are shared are on social media, and generally speaking, those photos are in a tiny little 2-inch by 2-inch square. After shooting these pics I quickly learned that sometimes it's ok to leave the big camera at home!

Now, I have to ask. When you snap and post, are you primarily using your phone or a "big" camera? I'd love to know in the comments below! And, don't forget to add your link as well.

This wraps up October's Picture Perfect Project, and sadly ends the Picture Perfect Project all together. All good things must come to an end, and this is true for the PPP. After some deliberate thought and consideration, the co-hosts of this link-up decided that with the busyness of the holiday season fast approaching, this would be a good time to hang up the proverbial hat. Thank you for joining us these past 10 months! We hope you found inspiration to pick up your camera and snag a few picture perfect moments!

  1. I love that you shot photos with both. That was such a great idea to show differences. I love my big camera and use it way more than I used to, but I still need to get better.

  2. Yay, I was right lol. Another giveaway for me was the blue sky. But I've seen so many people capture amazing pictures with their phone but I often think it's due to the way it's edited after it's taking with their phone. I love taking pictures with my phone but I feel it always needs more editing than when I take it with the big camera.

  3. The close-up was the giveaway for sure but you are right the rest are pretty even Steven really. Oh how the cell phone cameras have advanced through the years! What a fun place for a boy to explore.

  4. I mean. I love my big camera... but it's heavy. I work out enough as it is? But really. Unless you're blowing up for giant poster sized prints to use all over your house the phone ain't half bad!

  5. I literally had NO CLUE and had to cheat. I admit it. I usually look for some sort of blur in the background which means the focus was up close, but they truly were very similar. Though I think my eye is trained to the iPhone because that's all I have. But seriously, both sets were equally amazing! It's so great what camera phones can do these days!

  6. I guessed iphone for the first set and wow, that's impressive! I can't seem to figure out iphone photography. Not that I'm all that good at using my big camera! lol.

  7. My wifi memory card ruined me! Now I only want to take pictures with my big camera and then move them to my phone via wifi! Unless there is a lot of natural light, I do not like to use my camera on my phone. These photos are great, friend! I love the whole concept of this. Maybe I just need to practice more with my iPhone.

  8. I use my phone so much more than our big camera. It's just so handy!

  9. Love this! I would love to do something similar and take essentially the same photo with both to compare. I'm a total camera snob, and yes to what Crystal said! Unless there is natural light, I'm just not happy with my iPhone photos. I go in phases with IG. Sometimes there are a lot of camera photos (summer--when I actually have time), but oftentimes, it's mostly phone photos. I've tried really hard in recent months to take better iPhone photos and I think editing (I use ColorStory app) helps!

  10. Love all the pictures! I agree, the only give away for me was the closeup shot. Can you believe how far phone cameras have come?!

  11. If I'm being honest, using my iPhone is just much easier and when you are trying to prevent the 3 year old from playing in traffic, you always go with ease.

  12. I am an iPhone only photographer (can I even use that title? Lol) but really phones pictures are getting to be so good its not that big of a deal to me anymore. Love the comp shots!

  13. I always always like my pictures better when I take the time to actually shoot with my DSLR. But, like you, I just don't want to lug it around AND I feel really conspicuous with it. Like, who do I think I am? lol. Certainly not a photographer. Why would I whip out my DSLR in Chick Fil A? So I just use my iPhone instead, 90% of the time.

  14. I use both but I do prefer the photos I take with my DSLR. Especially since I started shooting RAW and editing. I love the blurry background look so I really love the ease of controlling that on my camera since I find the manual app on the phone confusing (I know many others love it). Your photos are all great, so I'm curious, when you use the big camera do you shoot manually?

  15. You're photos have been killing it lately! So impressed most are from your iPhone. I'm one of the crazies that takes my DSLR everywhere. But I will say that mine is super light (I seriously bought that particular model for that very reason).
