What's In a Name // Julia Kay

After we had Marcus I was certain any other babies I might have would be boys. Scott and I quickly and easily came up with a second boys name basically days after Marcus arrived. We were set for Baby #2, whenever that may be.

Three years later you can imagine my surprise when we discovered we were pregnant, but this time with a girl.

While we were elated that our newest addition would be a little girl we could not decide on a name for her. We went round for round with names, tossing so many out, I thought we would never land on a name we agreed upon.

For some time I thought the little lady's name would be Charlotte. I adored that name (and still do). Scott? Not so much. When the Royals named the princess Charlotte, and we quickly realized a different name would be a good idea (because let's be real, there will be approximately 1,000 Charlottes in the graduating class of 2033).

At one point one of us suggested Julia. The debate is still out as to just which of us was first to select the name. We kept at the name game, but inevitably kept coming back to Julia. We came back to that name so often we finally decided Julia was it.

A quick name search told us Julia means 'youthful.' According to Nameberry.com, "Julia is an enduring classic. Julia has so much going for it; ancient roots but a modern, fashionable feel, simplicity and sophistication, and connections to both saints and celebs..."
Precisely what we wanted.

Julia's middle name was relatively easy for us to choose. In fact, we decided on the little lady's middle name well before she had a first name.
Kay is a tribute to both Scott's and my mom. My mom's first name is Kathy and Scott's mom's first name is Kathleen, but most call her Katie. We shortened both names and came up with Kay.

While I'm not a fan of shortening Marcus' name to Mark (please, call him Marcus), I am actually a-ok with Julia being called Jules.

And there it is: Julia Kay, and how her name came to be.

  1. Love her name! It is so perfect that you can honor both grandmas with the middle name too. We ended up naming our girls' middle names after their grandmas... thank God we had two girls ;).

  2. Beautiful! All of our boys' names are names we just liked and their middle names are family names, too! I love how you came up with her middle name :)

  3. I absolutely adore her name =) it's very classy! We tend to call Alyx "Allie" a lot. I'm not sure why...but Brian said to me the other day, why didn't we hair name her Allie because that's what we call her most of the time! Haha. It's funny the nicknames kids can get =)

  4. Beautiful name. I have a friend who recently named her daughter Julia. I hadn't really heard it used much before then but it's a beautiful name.

  5. I think her name is so pretty! Like you, we have a middle name, but haven't settled on a first name yet. We've been going round and round too, but I think we have it down to 2 now :)

  6. I love her full name...Julia Kay. Justin and I had a list of like 5 boy names when we were pregnant, but couldn't agree on any girl names. So, although I was hoping for a girl, we were relieved to find out that Rhys was a boy because we already knew the name! (We just had to figure out a middle name for him).

  8. Love it!! I love classic names and family middle names!

We ruled out Charlotte this go round for the same reason. Bummer it's so so popular!

  10. Oh I love it!!! It's perfect for her and I love how you guys came up with her name. I love that her middle name is a tribute to your mom and Scott's mom also. I wanted to have Mason's middle name at least start with a S for my mom (Susan) since he was a boy and obviously Susan would not do for a middle name but I was dead set on Mason and I didn't like how an S middle name sounded with it. So he will just have to know how much his Grandma would have LOVED him without the middle name.

  11. So precious! The name game can be HARD. We have had a boy named picked out since the beginning of time lol and Kinsey was named the day after we found out she was a girl, but poor Brielana took 9 months. I love how you paid homage to both moms, that is wonderful.

  13. Jules is pretty, too! But I love the story of how Julia became 'Julia'. Now, send some naming mojo my way, ha ha!

  14. I'm a Julia, however, sometime in my childhood it was shortened to Julie. By the time I thought Julia was beautiful and not just the name my mom called me when she was mad, it was too late to "change my name". Everyone calls me Jules. :) Beautiful that you chose to honor both moms, very sweet.

  19. I love the nod to the grandmothers. I wish I had done something similar for my mom.

  20. While I love her, you and the name... the name I picked for her would have been a better story to tell. Jenner Kardashian would be one popular baby girl.
