A Swift Kick in the Pants

It's hard to describe, or pinpoint, the emotions that have hit like a tidal wave these past few days. One minutes it's sadness, the next it's anger, and in another instant it's disbelief, shock, and denial.

Without drawing this out, our landlord called us Sunday. She informed us she had sold her town home. She also informed us the place is currently in escrow, and will likely close at the end of the month. We had no idea, and her news hit us like a ton of bricks.

The place we've called home for over two years will soon be a memory.

That brings my anxiety to an all-time high.

We knew this day would eventually come. In fact, we've been planning for it, and we thought we were ahead of the game. We even put an offer in to our landlord, but it wasn't enough to land us this place permanently.

A month ago we put an offer on a town home within our complex. However, the place is a short sale. While the seller's immediately accepted our offer, the bank is taking its sweet time. The term "short sale" should seriously be re-evaluated. It's anything but short.

Did I mention the anxiety?

For the past three nights I've fought a losing battle with sleep. As exhausted as my body is, my mind goes into overdrive. I just lie in bed thinking of how little control we have over this situation. I think of my sweet little boy, and how I just want him to have stability.

Everything will work out. It always does. This is just another one of life's tests. So, I'm tossing in the towel, I'm throwing up my hands, and I've been praying like I've never prayed before.

Just for chits and giggles, let's take a look at the difference in housing between L.A. versus Kansas City. Because, what's not to love about a swift kick in the pants?…

  1. The end of the month as in 8 days? Or the end of Februray? If I had to move in 8 days I would cry. Or will the new people let you live there a bit longer to figure things out? The housing prices are like that here in NJ. In NJ you'd get that 2 bedroom, 1 bath house for the same price as a much bigger house in KC. Must be a coastal thing.

  2. :( I hate to hear this! Because I know how stressed I am right now too! Looks like we will both be moving here in a few weeks…Us - to a city we have never been, into a house we have never seen, from a dual to single income, with the military withholding our orders until February 1st, so we can't even schedule the move-out, movers, and having to just guess on the move-in date when we're making all our plans! If you need to vent, you know where to find me!

  4. I totally hear you on the housing and love the comparison. Is there an RA out a bit that S could apply for and get you guys farther out of the city, therefore finding a better size home? Or is he willing to commute farther to get you guys something you'd need? I'll be thinking of you my friend. Keep me updated of what you guys do!

  6. Hopefully you hear good news on the town home soon. I hope they are giving you until the end of February to move out. It isn't the end of this month is it? I will pray for you as well! Keep your head high. Everything will work out :)

  10. I hurt for you bc we are also still in the same situation. no lie. we put in an offer on a home 12 days ago that is also a short sale and have yet to hear anything. and on Monday a realtor came over to our rental and took the dimensions to get it ready to list. seriously, not at all what I needed right now. it is unbelievably frustrating. and yes, "short sale" is such a decieving term. we gave the bank a deadline for an answer, but I have a feeling it wont do anything...
good luck and I pray for you that it all works itself out and soon!

  13. =( Oh gosh. I hope you can find something, and something soon! This happened to my husband and I when we were pregnant with our first baby. Our landlord knocked on our door telling us the house we were living in had been sold and we needed to move out. Talk about stressful. I was six months pregnant and we found ourselves living with my husband's parents for a while. Although it totally stinks right now it will all totally work out in the end for you!!

  14. This is horrible!! But sometimes its for the best and good things will come of it. You once told me that through the hard times, we can make it through as long as we just have faith and let things take their direction as they are supposed to. I know things will work out for you and your family. And yeah, the cost disparity is insane!!

  15. Oh my goodness. How awful! Do you really mean like end of this month as in 8 days?! Gosh I feel like a jerk being all excited about our move when you guys are being forced into this corner... :( You are right things work out. They work out for a reason but I can't imagine your stress. Well I can relate but it's not the same. I'll be thinking of you guys and sending happy thoughts your way!

  21. Totally know how you feel on the home prices. Where we are from, you can get a mansion for 250,000! Here that's a very modest home :) and we live in the most affordable Bay Area city! I would love to be able to live in the city but there is no way we could afford a million dollar 500 square foot home :) I really hope it all works out the way you want! Sending positive thoughts your way!

But it's the interim that's hard to deal w/. And Marcus will be fine, kids are so resilient he'll never know s/t happened, it'll just be an adventure for him! Good luck!

  23. Oh geez. You need to get back to KC! I can't even imagine the difference in home prices. What a shock that must be. Good luck with the transition. I'm sure it'll all work out, it just may be stressful in the meantime. Hang in there!
